Lieutenant Colonel Philip J. Durando
Public Health Activity-Hawaii Commander
Lieutenant Colonel Philip Durando is a native of California. He received his commission in the Medical Service Corps in 2004 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps. He was a Distinguished Military Graduate and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University Long Beach, and a Master of Health Administration from Baylor University.
LTC Durando’s military education includes the AMEDD Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the AMEDD Recruiting Course, the AMEDD Patient Administration Course, the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Course, The Joint Medical Operations Course and the Command and General Staff College.
LTC Durando’s most recent assignment was the Chief of Mission Support at the USTRANSCOM Patient Movement Requirements Center-West, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, HI. His past assignments include Executive Assistant to the MEDCOM G-3/5/7, Falls Church, VA; Executive Officer for the MEDCOM Disability Evaluation System, Falls Church, VA; Deputy Surgeon, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, Fort Shafter, HI; Chief of Patient Administration, Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, HI; Deputy Chief of Patient Administration, Madigan Army Medical Center, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA; AMEDD Recruiter, New York City, NY; Commander, C Co 589th BSB, 41st Fires Brigade, Fort Hood, TX; Brigade Medical Operations Officer, 41st Fires Brigade, Fort Hood, TX; Executive Officer, C Co 204th BSB, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, TX; and Ambulance Platoon Leader, C Co 204th BSB, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, TX.
LTC Durando’s combat deployments include two tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (2005-2006 & 2008-2009) as well as a deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (2013-2014). In 2017 he deployed to Puerto Rico in response to Hurricane Maria during a Defense Support of Civil Authorities mission.
His military awards and decorations include, the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Humanitarian Assistance Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, NATO Medal, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, and the Meritorious Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster. He has earned the Expert Field Medical Badge, the Basic Recruiters Badge, and the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification. LTC Durando is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit (O2M3) and is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives.
LTC Durando has been married for 11 years to his wife Erin. They have three wonderful children, Saul, Quinn and Emmie.
