Misawa Air Base Veterinary Treatment Facility is professionally staffed by Army Veterinary Corps personnel with the primary mission of providing complete veterinary care for all government-owned animals. The Misawa Veterinary Treatment Facility supports the local area of Misawa Air Base. The facility treats and cares for 35th Security Forces military working dogs, active duty and designated civilians’ privately owned animals.

All pets living on post must be registered with the veterinary treatment facility upon arrival. On-post housing may limit the number and breed of pets that can live in on-post housing. Contact on-post housing for more information.

On-base housing has a maximum of two pets per family. Species restriction states only dogs, cats, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, fish, turtles, and passerine or psittacine birds. Breed restrictions are in place for dogs.

The following breeds are banned: Pit Bull (American Staffordshire Bull Terrier or English Staffordshire Bull Terrier), Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, Chow, wolf hybrids, and other individual animals deemed to display aggressive behavior.
Quarantine Facilities
Pets living off base that have not completed their 180 day quarantine, provided all supporting documentation, and passed their final quarantine examination can be boarded at the Misawa Pet Kennel or with personnel living on base. Personnel entering restriction of movement (ROM) may be allowed to have their pets in ROM housing, pending approval from 35th Force Support Squadron. Personnel currently housed off-base are single service members with greater than three years’ time in service or greater than E-9 rank. Kennel hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Closed 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. daily, closed Sunday and federal holidays. https://35fss.com/pet-kennel/
PCS In and Out Information
IN: Our rotator departs Seattle-Tacoma, stops in Misawa, and continues on to Osan, South Korea (and then returns).You are required to have an initial quarantine appointment with Misawa VTF within 72 hours of arrival per government of Japan (GoJ) requirement. This is currently delayed during human restriction of movement (ROM), but we must see patients for initial quarantine exams as soon as their owners clear ROM. All pets are on GoJ quarantine on-base until they receive a final quarantine examination from the base veterinarian. If a pet has reached the end of their 180 day quarantine and has all appropriate documentation at presentation for the initial quarantine exam, the initial and final quarantine can be completed during the same visit. OUT: Our military veterinarian has USDA credentialing and is able to write valid international health certificates to PCS locations without the need for USDA endorsement, but the veterinarian is not available at all times. We ask that movers call us as soon as possible once they have a location and approximate date of PCS. At that time, we can provide information on requirements for that location and get your Family ready for travel. Health certificate appointments are scheduled up to 30 days in advance of departure. The appointment itself must be within 10 days of arrival at PCS destination because health certificates are valid for a maximum of 10 days.

How long is the health certificate good for?
Your health certificate is only valid for 10 days (and it must be valid when you arrive at your destination). Call for an appointment 30 days out from PCS, and have the examination scheduled within 7 days of departure.

What do I do when pcsing with a pet?
Call the base vet as soon as you find out where you’re going. Each country may require different steps to PCS pets.

Do you take walk-in appointment?
No, a couple vet clinics off base take walk-in appointments. Yoshidas vet clinic, and T’s vet clinics off base take walk-ins daily.

What if I have an emergency?
We are unable to provide emergency care for personally owned animals, and don’t have on-call. You best option is to contact a vet clinic off base. Although no surrounding clinics have emergency on-call, some have weekend or late afternoon hours.

How do I register my pet?
If your pet was obtained off base, please come in with all adoption paperwork and your ID to make an account for your pet. If your pet travelled with you to Japan (commercially or via rotator) and you have seen a military vet in the past, they are already in the Global Veterinary Management Practice database.

What is a NEO folder and why is it required?
The Noncombatant Evacuation Operation (NEO) folder is for emergency evacuation processes for the base. You need to have the most up to date rabies certificate, blank health certificate, and immunization record. This expedites the processing of the thousands of pets here on base so we can get everyone home safely. Please have this updated at all times in case of emergency.

Why is rabies required annually for dogs in Japan?
Japan is a rabies free country and therefore rabies vaccination is required every single year for dogs in Japan. Our clinic uses an annual rabies vaccination for cats because it causes optimal immunity with minimal side effects for cats.
