CAMP ZAMA, Japan — Soldiers at Camp Zama helped ensure the safety of thousands of people celebrating Independence Day by enforcing strict food sanitation standards for vendors during the installation’s annual open-post event, Army officials said.
Camp Zama’s Independence Day celebration, one of the installation’s largest community outreach events, drew more than 4,000 visitors from the U.S. military community and surrounding Japanese neighborhoods. As part of the effort to strengthen ties between U.S. forces and local residents, the post opened its gates to the public for live entertainment, fireworks and festival-style food.
Ahead of the event, Soldiers from the Zama branch of the U.S. Army’s medical forces inspected eight off-post food vendors to ensure they met strict military sanitary standards. The inspections focused on food handling, storage temperatures, hand-washing and prevention of cross-contamination.
By requiring vendors to comply with these standards, medical personnel said they neutralized the risk of foodborne pathogens and contamination that could have affected thousands of attendees.
Army leaders said the operation demonstrated the role of combat-ready medical forces in force health protection, even in a festive, non-combat environment.
They said safeguarding food safety at large public events is directly linked to the health and readiness of U.S. service members, their families and the local Japanese community.
The event concluded without any reported cases of foodborne illness, which officials credited to the preventive measures and close coordination between the medical team, event organizers and civilian vendors.
