NAVAL BASE GUAM — Nineteen Soldiers from the Guam Naval Branch earned their Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications on Feb. 6 2026 after completing a comprehensive training course coordinated with Naval Hospital Guam. The course, led by CPT Autumn Fotta of the Guam Naval Branch, provided essential instruction in life-saving techniques, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use of automated external defibrillators, and emergency response protocols.
BLS certification is a fundamental requirement for both healthcare professionals and military personnel, ensuring that individuals are prepared to respond effectively to life-threatening emergencies such as cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, and choking. The training emphasized hands-on practice and scenario-based learning, allowing Soldiers to develop confidence and proficiency in critical skills.
The collaboration between the Guam Naval Branch and Naval Hospital Guam reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen partnerships and enhance the overall readiness of military medical teams. By working together, the two organizations were able to deliver high-quality training that meets the rigorous standards required for military operations.
With the addition of 19 newly certified Soldiers, the Guam Naval Branch has significantly improved its ability to provide immediate medical assistance during both routine activities and contingency operations. The training supports the Army’s broader goals of sustaining health, delivering combat-ready formations, and maintaining a high standard of professional excellence across the force.
Officials say the BLS certification not only increases the unit’s operational effectiveness but also contributes to a safer environment for both patients and personnel. The initiative is part of a larger commitment to ensuring that all Soldiers are equipped with the skills necessary to protect and save lives, both on and off duty.
