BREMERTON, Washington — Army and Navy personnel are working side by side to strengthen food safety and protect the health of service members and their families at Naval Base Kitsap.
The Kitsap Branch Food Inspection team recently partnered with the U.S. Navy’s Preventive Medicine team for a cross-training initiative aimed at unifying their expertise and enhancing their response to foodborne illness threats. The joint effort focused on bridging the gap between food inspection protocols and safe food handling practices, ensuring a seamless approach to public health on base.
During the training, both teams shared best practices and coordinated strategies for tracing foodborne illnesses from affected service members all the way back to commercial sources. This integrated approach means that, in the event of an outbreak, Army and Navy personnel can now operate as a single, cohesive unit—delivering a faster and more effective response to protect the community.
Officials say the cross-training initiative is part of a broader plan to foster collaboration and readiness across military branches, ensuring that service members and their families benefit from the highest standards of food safety and preventive care.
